Advantages of argon arc welding

2023 08/29

The reason why argon arc welding has been widely used is mainly because it has the following advantages.
1. Argon gas protection can isolate the adverse effects of oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, etc. in the air on the arc and molten pool, reduce the burning loss of alloy elements, and obtain dense, splash free, and high-quality welding joints;
2. The arc combustion of argon arc welding is stable, with concentrated heat, high arc column temperature, high welding production efficiency, narrow heat affected zone, and low stress, deformation, and crack tendency of the welded parts;
3. Argon arc welding is an open arc welding method, which is easy to operate and observe;
4. Low electrode loss, easy to maintain arc length, and no flux or coating during welding, making it easy to achieve mechanization and automation;
5. Argon arc welding can weld almost all metals, especially some refractory and easily oxidized metals such as magnesium, titanium, molybdenum, zirconium, aluminum, and their alloys;
6. Not limited by the position of the welding element, full position welding can be carried out.
Disadvantages of argon arc welding
1. Due to the large heat affected area, argon arc welding often causes defects such as deformation, high hardness, sand holes, local annealing, cracking, pinholes, wear, scratches, undercuts, insufficient bonding force, and internal stress damage to the workpiece after repair. Especially in the repair process of small defects in precision castings, they protrude on the surface. In the field of repairing defects in precision castings, cold welding machines can be used instead of argon arc welding. Due to the small heat release of cold welding machines, they effectively overcome the shortcomings of argon arc welding and make up for the repair difficulties of precision castings.
2. Compared with electrode arc welding, argon arc welding has a higher degree of harm to the human body. The current density of argon arc welding is high, and the light emitted is relatively strong. The ultraviolet radiation generated by its arc is about 5-30 times that of ordinary electrode arc welding, and the infrared radiation is about 1-1.5 times that of electrode arc welding. During welding, the ozone content generated is relatively high. Therefore, it is recommended to choose a place with good air circulation for construction, otherwise it will cause significant harm to the body.
3. For metals with low melting points and easy evaporation, such as lead, tin, and zinc, welding is more difficult.
Application of argon arc welding
Argon arc welding is suitable for welding non ferrous metals and alloy steels that are prone to oxidation (mainly using Al, Mg, Ti and their alloys for welding and stainless steel); Suitable for single sided welding and double sided forming, such as backing welding and pipe welding; Tungsten argon arc welding is also suitable for thin plate welding.
